Musical Memories

Believed to be the first of its kind in the country, two new choirs for older people were set up in 2013 in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County that are specifically welcoming to people affected by dementia.

The choirs were set up as part of a unique project by dlr/HSE Arts and Health Partnership together with the Living Well with Dementia Stillorgan-Blackrock. The Arts and Health Partnership aims to make creativity intrinsic to life.

The purpose of the choirs was to give people an opportunity to come together in a relaxed environment and reconnect through music. Music and singing helps lift mood, provides cognitive stimulation and supports social interaction.

Those taking part did not have to be able to sing to have joined. There was no element of competition or performance.

There are now similar choirs all over the country.

Musicianship Workshop

At Newpark Academy of Music, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of music. Our Outreach Programme is designed to bring music education directly to local primary schools in South Dublin, offering free monthly musicianship classes that make learning music fun and accessible.

These interactive sessions are tailored for young students and focus on teaching essential music skills through engaging activities. From rhythm games to melodic exercises, our classes are filled with fun, ensuring that students learn in a lively and supportive environment.

Led by our experienced music educators, the programme aims to inspire creativity, build confidence, and foster a lifelong love for music.

By participating in this programme, schools can offer their students a unique opportunity to explore the world of music, regardless of their prior experience. We are committed to making a positive impact in our community by making music education accessible to all.

Artist-in-Residence

Our Artist-in-Residence Outreach Programme brings world-class musicians and educators directly to the community, enriching the lives of students and the public alike. Through this initiative, our resident artists lead workshops, masterclasses, and performances at local schools, community centers, and cultural events, making high-quality music education accessible to all. The programme is designed to inspire creativity, foster artistic growth, and build lasting connections between professional artists and the communities they serve. By breaking down barriers to arts education, we ensure that everyone has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of music.
